On Trend with REGARD Magazine ....Ask our Stylist

Dear Regard Stylist,
My friends hate that I love to wear turtlenecks in the fall. But, they do have the tendency to look a bit matronly. How can I make my turtlenecks look chic?
Priscilla H., San Francisco

Dear Priscilla,
  • Turtlenecks are a little tricky. There a few rules to consider first as you put your outfit together.
  • Your turtleneck should be thin enough to keep you from overheating, and for layering purposes. The thinner fabric is also more figure flattering and will lay better.
  • If you happen to have a bra size that’s larger than an A cup, or if you carry a bit of weight in your midsection, ribbing and cable knits will only add bulk and stretch out across your chest. This is not a good look, as it will highlight any area you may want to camouflage, so beware.

In a turtleneck you are very covered up, from neck to navel. Vamp it up a touch by showing a little skin. Adding a twill, official looking jacket will assure that a little vamp doesn’t become overt.

If your outfit needs to be more work appropriate, try a slim fitting turtleneck with a narrow fitting pair of slacks. In either case, use accessories to add visual interest and depth to your turtleneck outfit.

Hope this helps!

On Trend with REGARD Magazine .... Ask our Stylist

The Holidays are upon us and we have received hundreds of questions about what to wear for different occasions this season. Tweet or Facebook us your questions, and it just might be turned into our next blog!

Dear REGARD Stylist,
I waited until the last minute and have a ton of shopping to do for my family and friends. I need to be comfortable for all the running around I will be doing, but I also want to look cute. What is the best way to be in style but still retain comfort for my outing to the mall that promises long hours?   Nicole, Los Angeles, Ca

Dear Nicole,
Your fashion dilemma has an easy fix. Follow along with me and let’s put your outfit together:

Start with your favorite pair of jeans. The wide leg roomy ones are perfect because they won’t be too tight even after hours of shopping.

On top of your jeans, your favorite t-shirt is a great choice. Logo or not, it’s most likely soft and worn in from the many times you have washed it.

Then add your best flats; the ones that are already broken in, and are comfortable enough to walk in all day.

Use these easy basics as your foundation.

Layering is the best thing you can do for long shopping trips. The hustle and bustle of the season ensures lots of people in your same situation hitting the mall.

A word of wisdom, don’t take your coat or heavy jacket into the mall or store. It will only weigh you down as your shopping excursion goes on. Lots of people + lots of movement = plenty of body heat.

Thin layers do best, as they are easy to remove if necessary.

A thin sweater over you t-shirt and a scarf will add color, texture, and depth to an otherwise very basic outfit.

Finally, a few light accessories will complete the look. Please note that unnecessary jewelry can be a nuisance during your shopping trip.

A watch is a practical addition to this outfit, as it will allow you keep track of the time as you venture out and do you holiday shopping. A stylish version will also be decorative, as opposed to bracelets.

A small purse with a long strap will be a great asset. Wearing it cross body style will allow for hands-free shopping and easy access to your purchases.

There you have it, a comfy, yet chic look that is definitely worthy of any long shopping trip. Hope this helps!

On Trend with REGARD Magazine .... Giving Thanks

Tomorrow is Thanksgiving, and for most American’s, this means a day full of great friends and family. In response to all the questions we received about what to wear for the auspicious, food filled day, we have put together 2 fool proof outfits that should help to alleviate the stress of dressing.

For a comfortable and casual turkey pig out, start with a pair of thick knit leggings. The elastic waist will be your greatest ally after dinner and right before dessert. A long, loose fitting, embellished t-shirt will be an easy pick. It covers your bum, and will be a relaxed fit over a full tummy.  Follow that with a pair of super tall flat boots and a cozy, but tailored long cardigan.

Finally, a few colorful accessories like a big hobo bag and long earrings solidify your look as chic, with a comfort food focus.

In case your holiday celebration isn’t so relaxed and calls for more stylish attire, don’t worry. You don’t have to give up comfort for style. You may, however have to give up that third serving of candied yams.

Begin with a great pair of palazzo style jeans. The tie at the top is great for any waistline adjustment that needs to be made throughout the day. A jersey knit turtle neck is stretch -tastic and will be a comfy alternative to anything buttoned up. The exaggerated neck and shoulder give a basic turtleneck some flair. And the cabernet colored shoes and bag add elegance to an otherwise simple but chic ensemble.

Whatever style best fits your holiday festivities, Happy Thanksgiving, from all of us at REGARD Magazine, and remember to be grateful for life itself, if nothing else. Enjoy!
